Animal Lesson #7: Conservationist Jane Goodall and Chimpanzees

As a child, I read stories and watched movies about Jane Goodall and I admired her for her success in conservation efforts.  As an adult, you can inspire children to take action and help the environment.

As an adult, I had the pleasure of becoming more connected to Jane Goodall.  I heard her speak at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. Wow! What an inspiration to see her live. Jane presented slides from her chimpanzee research in Tanzania. To hear her tell the stories, to hear the passion in her voice about the next generation. She encouraged the audience to get involved in Roots & Shoots, a global youth organization that gets youth involved in service learning projects that promote care and concern for animals, the environment, and the human community.

After I saw Jane in person, I visited a museum with a special exhibit all about her life. Very nicely done, but nothing beats hearing stories live from a leader.

You can get your child involved in conservation through Jane's Roots & Shoots organization.  Search for an existing group or event or create a new one.  Example events include 1) "Anything with A Plug Recycling Event" Carmel, IN, collected 30 tons to recycle, 2) Run for Wild Bronz Zoo, NY, 3) Animal Shelter drives
http://rootsandshoots.org/

I realized I was also indirectly connected to Jane through working with my past company providing funds to the Angel Fund, a cheetah conservation effort with the help of dogs.  I had the chance to meet Thane Maynard (Cincinnati Zoo Director) who co-authored the book Hope for Animals and Their World with Jane.  After meeting Thane and the Angel Fund initiater Cathryn Hiker, I took my kids to witness the cheetah's run at the zoo.  When I took my kids to see Jack Hanna's live animal show, Jack mentioned his admiration for Jane.  We are all so connected and so are the plants and animals in our world.  How are you connected to conservation leaders and efforts?  How do you pass that passion down to your children?  Please share your ideas.

Agriculture Lesson #2: 7 Blueberry Events

Blueberry pancakes, blueberry pie...mmm, kids love blueberries.  Kids are curious about fruit.  Do they grow on trees or bushes?  Help your kids learn about how blueberries are grown by taking them to a pick your own farm or a blueberry festival.
Break out the US map.  The blueberry gets recognized as the official fruit of Maine.  Maine produces 25% of all lowbush blueberries and requires about 50,000 beehives for pollination.  Michigan leads in highbush berry production, accounting for 32% of the small berries.

For your best pick-your-own experience, begin early while energy is high and before the hot sun beats down.  Bring your sunscreen, sunglasses, water bottle, and coolers to bring home the treasured fresh berries.  We always pick extra.  My employees showed appreciation when I brought them berries to the office.

We've also celebrated the blueberry harvest at the Marshall Blueberry Festival.  It's been named a "Top 100 Event" in North America by the American Bus Association in 1997, 1999, and 2007.  Many of the blueberry festivals include kid pleasing foods like blueberry pancakes.  If you feel like burning the calories, many of these festivals also have a variety of sports events.  The Marshall Blueberry Festival includes a 5K run, arm wrestling, volleyball, and softball.

Here's 7 festivals in the United States:

1.  Marshall Blueberry Festival, Plymouth, IN, Aug. 30- Sept. 2 2013; 45+ year old festival with parade, auto show, music, and 300+ craft vendors  http://www.blueberryfestival.org/pg/history.html

Gym Class #3: Robbie Knievel & 4 AMA Motorcycle Events

Robbie Knievel, Photo by Krenda

Robbie's truck says "leaving a legend" with a photo of his father Robert Craig "Evel" Knievel and his photo.

At Kings Island amusement park in Ohio, we watched Robbie Knievel break the record, jumping more semis, breaking his own father's record that was set at the same exact place many years ago.

The kids loved the excitement and it gave us a great opportunity to discuss the importance of setting goals, achieving them, and setting even higher goals...a cycle of success. Sports can give you an opportunity to discuss risk taking and challenging yourself.

If you are looking to inspire your child with sports with speed, you may want to check out the AMA flat track motorcycle events.  Locations vary each year, but here's four classic locations:

1) Allen County Fairgrounds, Lima, OH, pea-gravel half mile track adds a challenge, late June
2) Peoria Race Park, Peoria, IL, a historic site with a high flying jump sending riders 140 ft. plus into the air, August
3) Indiana State Fairgrounds, Indianapolis, IN, AMA notes a high energy audience, July
4) Springfield Mile, Springfield Illinois (IL), known as the crown jewel of the AMA Pro Flat Track, it's a tradition both Memorial and Labor Day weekends

Here's the website with event dates and costs:  http://www.amaproracing.com/ft/events/
*Disclaimer:  A friend of mine owns a motorcycle team.

Thinking Global in the USA #1: 8 Chinese Dragon Boat Races

Dragon Boat Races, Photo by Krenda
Dragon boat races, an ancient Chinese sport, began over 2,000 years ago.  Today it's an international sport.  Your kids can learn about a unique sport and culture at one event by taking them to a Chinese Dragon Boat race.  Before the race, get out the globe and talk about different type of boat races around the world including swan boat racing in Thailand and snake boat racing in India.  In the US, Dragon Boat races often provide free admission, so take all your family & friends!

Watching a race provides a feast for the eyes and ears with 40 foot boats, 20 paddlers per boat, and a drummer leading the pace and sychronizing the strokes.  The dragon head and tail attach just for the races.  The steersmans located in the back of the boat added fun and humor by wearing fancy and/or funny hats at the Evansville, IN race our family attended.  Dragon boats may be relatively rare, but all the paddling could inspire your family to try canoeing.
You don't need a passport to watch a race.  Races are held across the US in Spring, Summer, and Fall.  Here's 8 other Dragon Boat Races in the US:

1.  Dragon Boat Festival - Tempe, AZ, March - watch the lake light up at night when nearly 50 boats create the fantasy of lights boat parade
 http://azdba.com/Festival/

2.  Long Beach Dragon Boat Spring Race - Long Beach, CA - Marine Stadium also hosts martial arts and acrobat performances

3.  Charleston Dragon Boat Festival - Charleston, SC; May - celebrates cancer survivors and raised an impressive $150,000 for cancer survivors

4.  Portland Rose Festival Boat Race - Portland, OR, June - parade held same weekend

5.  Boston Dragon Boat Festival - Boston, Massachusetts, June - North America's longest running Dragon Boat festival, now hosting 60 teams and craft workshops including orgami and mask making.

Art & Sculpture #2: 7 Ice Sculpture Festivals in the US

Ice Sculpture Festival, Photo by Krenda
When you grow up in Northern Wisconsin, you have a choice to complain about the bitter cold or embrace the winter scene's beauty.  I remember as a child enjoying a winter festival in Feb. which included horse drawn carriage rides and cherries jubilee.  What caught my eye and attention were the ice sculptures, impressive pieces of art suddenly appearing on the square.

Exposure early in my life intrigued me to learn more about this art.  I continued to be captivated by ice sculptures.  I intently watched contests on cruise ships, amazed by such skill with a powerful chainsaw.  I even drove up to the largest and oldest ice festival in the United States, the Plymouth Ice Festival, in January.  We took our kids to the local ice festival in the "city of sculptures" - Hamilton, OH.  Another winter, we took them to an ice festival in Kentucky which included the artists demonstrating how to create the art from a block to the finished product, while listening to live music - so cool!

Lesson Idea
Art:  Before attending a sculpture festival, teach children that art can be made with lots of different medium - even ice!  It's also a science project as you teach children about solids transforming to liquids.
1.  Fill half gallon cardboard milk carton with water and freeze overnight
2.  Remove ice from container and stand block up in a pan
3.  Sprinkle rock salt on top
4.  Squirt colored water with eye droppers, watch the color run through the cracks

Here's 7 Ice Sculpture Festivals you and your kids could attend:

1.  Plymouth Ice Festival - Plymouth, Michigan (MI) pictured above
          http://www.plymouthicefestival.org/
2.  Stowe Winter Carnival - Stowe, Vermont
3.  Fire and Ice Festival - Mount Holly, New Jersey (NJ)
4.  The Greenbrier Festival - White Sulphur Springs, WV
5.  The Green River Crystal Classic Winter Festival - Green River, WY
6.  Ithaca Ice Wars - Ithaca, New York (NY)
7.  Titanic's Ice Sculpture Competiton - Pigeon Forge, TN

If you are making a road trip to the festival in Pigeon Forge and need to rent a cabin, check out my other blogs

Animal Lesson #6: Jack Hanna Inspires

I remember watching the Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom on a very small tv set at my grandparents house and imagining all the adventures.  Those shows ran from 1963 to 1988.  Now kids watch Jack Hanna and the Kratt Brothers on PBS public tv for animal adventure and conservation stories (we also saw Kratt Brothers, blog story coming soon).

"Jungle Jack" began his tv appearances much earlier as a frequent guest on the Late Night Show with host David Letterman.  Now Jack Hanna stars in numerous shows including Into the Wild, Animal Adventures, and Jack Hanna's Wild Countdown.

If your kids have special interest in a celebrity, look up whether they tour.  In this case, Jack Hanna travels around the nation giving a live animal show.  He brings a variety of animals including a cheetah, sloth, koala, and echidna.

We saw the show in Kentucky.  Jack had just arrived back to the United States from Africa and still gave a high energy show.  Jack has a home in Africa and has special interest in conserving gorillas in Africa.  He supports Partners in Conservation (PIC) which benefits mountain gorillas of Rwanda.

If Jack Hanna doesn't travel to your community, consider a trip to a zoo or conservation site to celebrate animal conservation.  In direct connection to Jack, visit the Columbus Zoo where Jack held the Director position.

What:  Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

Where:  Columbus, Ohio
 Cost:  $14.99 child (age 3-9), $19.99 adult, $10 parking
Check out times for "Animals on Safari Show"

The Wilds conservation park, also located in Ohio and connected to Jack provides kids the opportunity to learn animal conservation.  Jack filmed a show at this location.  We also took the kids to The Wilds, check out my blog story.
Consider learning about other animal lovers.  Jack connected to Betty White, known for her love for dogs, "In 2014 one of my dreams came true when Betty White graciously joined me for the opening of Heart of Africa..." Jack Hanna, Jack Hanna website.  I've also met Betty White.  Blog story coming soon...

Music Lesson #1: Steve Martin and 8 Bluegrass Festivals

Before your kids are teenagers, you have the opportunity to teach them that there's other music genres than just rap and R&B.  To widen their music appreciation, consider bluegrass - a genre invented in the United States by Bill Monroe.

Bring the lesson alive.  Take the kids to a concert, especially a festival with multiple acts.  We attended the Bill Monroe Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival in Morgantown, IN.  Besides recognition for having the world's oldest bluegrass festival, Morgantown is also the location of the International Bluegrass Music Museum.  Festival tickets ranged $20 to $30 per day.

Under the stars, sitting on the lawn, we experienced a real treat - watching Steve Martin play banjo.  Comedian, actor, writer, art collector, banjo player...what can't he do?  He won the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album in 2009 by releasing "The Crow:  New Songs for the 5-String Banjo."  A few jokes and a lot of amazing music, the whole family watched in awe.

Bluegrass festivals take place across the country every Summer and Fall.  Here's eight other bluegrass festivals:

1.  Joe Val Bluegrass Music Festival - Framingham, Massachusetts; Feb - indoor 3 day event at Sheraton in the Boston area, Kids Academy teaches kids age 5-17 to play and offers opportunity to perform on stage; early bird ticket $110
